I live in Oregon with a purple umbrella by my door. From October to April we go for days without seeing the sun, the moon, or the stars. The odd thing about that portable shelter from the rain is how rarely I open it, how rarely you see anybody with an umbrella open in Oregon. The rain tends to be misty. People here call it Liquid Sunshine. We believe we can weather a little wet without bothering to open the umbrellas we carry.
Other storms batter us besides rain: poverty, discord, death, disease, depression and war, to name a few. In America, most households used to own an umbrella for this less tangible kind of storm: The Holy Bible. Our amazing Bible contains a startling number of promises to help us and shelter us. A memorized Bible verse is a handy umbrella for life’s difficult storms. Those verses from memory are prayers if we remember to use them that way. When we are too stressed with the demands of the moment to come up with a prayer, we’ve got one already stored and ready for use without a need to search the Bible for the right passage to fit our need of the moment.*
A friend I know told me that she doesn’t like to bother God about little things. She saves him for big problems, like I only use my umbrella for heavy downpours. She doesn’t use the umbrella God provided. God is interested in the minute detail of our lives. He even numbers the hairs on our heads. (Matthew 10:30) But we all forget to turn to God in prayer sometimes.
The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing* for a reason. God loves us* and wants to help us*. Let’s open our umbrellas, give thanks to God for providing shelter, and watch God deliver on his promises.
Have a blessed day, safe in the shelter of our loving Father’s protection.
